Q and A

Question

I’ve just tested positive and my partner negative, how is this possible?

I’m 8 month pregnant and I’ve just tested positive. My husband tested negative, how is this possible?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

If your partner is negative and your test has been confirmed, this means that you contracted HIV from someone other than your partner. As to how you contracted HIV, you’ll need to think about any risks that you may have had. With regards to how it’s possible for someone to test positive and their partner negative, please see Q5 here: https://i-base.info/qa/what-are-the-most-asked-questions

Now that you’re aware of your status, it’s really important that you start taking ARVs. Not only will the ARVs help you, they’ll also help your unborn child.

Even if you’ve been diagnosed late in pregnancy, it’s still possible to have a negative child. Please see here: https://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy You’re going to need specialist care and support. ARVs are key.
