Q and A

Question

Do I need to take ARVs if I want to have a child?

I’m HIV positive. I’d like to have a child. I’m currently not using ARVs, will I need to start if I want to have a child?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

If you’re thinking about having a baby, then yes you should be taking ARVs. It’s the ARVs that will help reduce the risk of transmission to your baby as the following explains: https://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy

Not only will ARVs reduce the risk of transmission to your child, they’ll also control your HIV which is important.

As you’re yet to start medication, you may find the following helpful: https://i-base.info/guides/starting
