Question

Is it OK to take your meds at different times?

Hi, I have a hard time keeping track of the time to take my medication. Can this cause problems in the long run? I get out of work late by the time I get home I sometimes fall asleep and wake up at midnight to take my meds. But bottom line I hardly ever take them the same time.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

If your HIV is under control and your viral load is undetectable, it’s OK to take your meds a few hours either side of your normal time. For example, if you take them at 10pm, then taking them at midnight or 8pm is OK. If the gap is bigger than a few hours and this is happening often, you might develop resistance.

A good way of making sure that you don’t forget is to set an alarm on your phone. This is common.
