Q and A

Question

Is there an interaction between simvastatin and nevirapine?

Can I take simvastatin with nevirapine?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

The online drug interaction resource at Liverpool University says this interaction has not been formally studied. Based on low level of evidence, there is a potential interaction.

The direction of the interaction is not one that puts you at any risk.

This is because the nevirapine might reduce levels of simvastatin.

So there is no risk to your HIV combination and no risk of side effects from higher levels of either drug. This means it is safe to use the two drugs together.

Simvastatin is used to lower your cholesterol. If this doesn’t happen, your doctor might recommend using a slightly higher dose of simvastatin.

This interaction is expected to be similar for other statins. So if simvastatin doesn’t work your doctor might want to use a different type of drug to reduce cholesterol.
