Question
Can I switch to Biktarvy if I have HepB coinfection?
18 June 2021. Related: All topics, Changing treatment, Complications and coinfections.
I am a HIV-Hepatitis B co-infection patient. I have been taking Sustiva, Viread, Lamivudine, and Abacavir for 20 years. My CD4 averages 250 for all twenty years. My viral load undetectable.
My doctor suggests switching from this regimen to Biktarvy. I see warnings about taking Biktarvy with Hepatitis B infection.
Should I be concerned?
Answer
Hi
Thanks for letting us post the answer online.
Without your detailed medical history we can only talk in general terms. However. your doctor seems to be giving you good information by suggesting the change.
If you are concerned about hepatitis B coinfection (HBV), then both combinations include similar treatment for HBV.
More info on Biktarvy, including links for further information is at this link:

This combination include three HIV drugs in a single small pill that has few side effects.
Also, your current combination includes three drugs that are not normally used together. This is another good reason it might be good to change.
