Q and A

Question

I’ve been late with my meds, is this OK?

I have had a undectable viral load now for years, but last month in May I had a few days where I was late for my medication.

I was in hospital with food poisoning and had a really bad stomach for 2 days straight. This one my tablet was taken 5 hours late.

The other 7 times in May there was between half and hr to 3 hrs late.

Will this affect my viral load and become resistant to medication?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

When someone has an undetectable viral load, there’s a degree of flexibility with regards to when ARVs should be taken.

From what you’ve said, there’s no risk of rebound as you were still adhering to your meds, just taking them slightly late.

Viral rebounds happen when people stop taking their medication, which can then lead to resistance.

    Hi Anon82,

As long as you continue to adhere to your medication it’s very unlikely that you’ll develop resistance to your medication.

Since June 5th I have been taking my medication at the excat same time not being late.
I am so worried that my viral load will become resistant to this medication.
