Q and A

Question

Can you take multivitamins with Biktarvy?

I just switched to Biktarvy. Is it okay to take it along with my morning dose of Areds2 (vitamin C, E, zinc, copper)?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Biktarvy includes an integrase inhibitor which can have an interaction with multivitamins that include magnesium, aluminium or iron supplements. This means separating doses by at least two hours. If your supplements don’t include these, they are okay to take together.

This is the i-Base summary for Biktarvy:

This includes links to patient info and the full prescribing details on the EU medicines agency.

The full prescribing details (called SPC) are linked here:

Hi Richard, because of some of the vitamins/minerals that this supplement contains e.g., magnesium, zinc and calcium, it is recommeneded that you take them at the opposite end of the day to when you take Biktarvy.

This is because the supplements can risk preventing all the Biktarvy being absorbed by the body and reducing how well it works.
