Q and A

Question

Can you give babies formula milk?

I got tested for HIV when I was 5 months pregnant and I started taking medication. My baby is now 4-weeks old and I have been breastfeeding since birth. After giving birth my viral load was undetectable.

Recently my son has developed a rash, a mouth sore and a runny stomach. I have now decided to use formula, is that okay? He’s been on Nevirapine (NVP).

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

It’s great to hear that you’re undetectable, this is important.

Firstly if you child is unwell, which they sound like they are, they need to be seen by a doctor. Given your babies age, this is important.

With regards to changing to formula, yes this is possible. With formula there’s no risk of transmission.
