Question
After living away from the UK am I still entitled to NHS HIV care?
3 December 2021. Related: Access to treatment, All topics.
I was born in England, however, I have lived most of my life abroad. I just recently retired and want to move back to England for good. I am still a British citizen and hold a current UK passport. I was diagnosed HIV positive 30 years ago.
I take one tablet a day and my viral load has been undetectable for some years now. Overall, my health is very good. Am I still be eligible for NHS care, most importantly, my HIV medication?
Answer
Hi, how are you doing?
HIV care in the UK is free regardless of citizenship. Access to care can be via sexual health clinics. You do not need to be registered with a GP to access this.
As you are a UK national you can receive NHS care but will need to register. This form will help explain the process of moving back over to the UK and how to access general healthcare.
