Q and A

Question

Interaction between ARVs and clindamycin.

Hi I’m taking ARV treatment (efavirenz 600 mg, lamivudine 300 mg and tenofovir 300 mg). Is it okay to take antibiotics like clindamycin 300mg and cefuroxime 500mg?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

There is a potential interaction between efavirenz and clindamycin. If you speak to your pharmacist or doctor there may be a more suitable antibiotic for you to take. As for cefuroxime there are no interactions between any of the HIV medications you have mentioned.

If you have another question please ask,

Josh.

Hi, the interaction has low evidence. There has been a lack of study between co-administration of these two drugs. How Clindamycin is processed in the body means that there is some potential that it stops efavirenz being as effective.

This table demonstrates the interactions between your ARVs and drugs in the same class as Clindamycin: https://www.hiv-druginteractions.org/view_all_interactions/620558?co_drug_id=1838

As there is no observable interaction, only monitoring will be required by yourself and your doctor.

    Hi Josh,

When you say potential interaction, what does it mean? I ask my doctor and he told me that it’s okay to take both. Thanks
