Q and A

Question

Can dolutegravir cause changes in skin tone?

I have been on dolutegravir for about a month. I have become darker in the face and people are beginning to ask me what is wrong with me. Each time I hear this I feel depressed again. What can I do to change this? I am really worried about this. Please respond.

Answer

Hi Desmond, how are you doing?

I am sorry to hear that you have been feeling depressed and people are noticing this change in skin tone. Have you been able to speak to anyone about it?

Dolutegravir itself does not cause changes to skin tone. Are you on any other HIV medications?

There has been a study to show that some HIV medication impacts your levels of Vitamin D. Low Vitamin D can lead to darkening of the skin. This can be checked with a blood test.

As skin changes can be caused by a number of things it is important you speak to a doctor about this. It is best to rule out other things as well.

If you have another question please ask,

Josh.
