Question

Should I go back to breastfeeding?

Hi, I’m a HIV positive mother and on treatment. My viral load was 232 when I gave birth, I breastfed for 2 weeks and started formula feed 2 days ago. I think my baby is crying a lot and seems to be having stomach problems. Should I go back to breast milk and stop formula. Please help. The baby is on treatment and was born negative.

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Congratulations on having a baby. As you have switched it is not recommended to go back to breastfeeding. Doing so would possibly increase the risk of HIV transmission.

What sort of stomach problems is your baby having? Are you able to take them to see a doctor?

Josh.

Hi Taylor, how long has your baby had constipation. Constipation is quite common after switching to formula. It is harder for baby to digest and takes a little time for baby’s digestive system to adapt to the new feed.
