Question

What is a healthy range for CD4 count?

Hi and thank you for all your information shared. What is the range of a normal CD4 count for people on ARVs? And what are the norms of people HIV negative? I’m curious cause I want to compare my CD4 value with an HIV negative person. Thank you.

Answer

Hi, how are you?

A healthy range for a CD4 count is anywhere between 430 and 1690. This is regardless of HIV status, though it is a good marker of health for an HIV positive person to have a CD4 count greater than 500.

Giving a range for HIV positive people isn’t as clear. As HIV impacts CD4 count is is possible for CD4 count to be 0 and if on medication, could be as high as someone living without HIV. In general you can consider this range as from 0 – 1690. This value will all depend on how HIV has impacted your own body, how well you have responded to medication and how quickly you started.

This link will explain more about CD4 count.
