Q and A

Question

Do Atroiza to Luvigen both do the same thing?

I was on Atroiza for about 3 years. They recently changed me to Luvigen. Does this still have the same effect?

Answer

Hi there

Thanks.

Atroiza and Luvigen are two different treatments for HIV. Each of these meds contain three active drugs. They are both generic HIV combinations.

Luvigen is a newer med that contains doulegravir, tenofovir (TD) and lamivudine (3TC).

Atroiza is an older med that contains efavirenz, tenofovir (TD) and emtricitabine (FTC).

Both are good at keeping viral load undetectable but dolutegravir is now seen as a better choice than efavirenz.

Your doctor should have explained the differences before changing your treatment.

Livigen is taken in the morning and most people find this easier to take.

Atroiza is taken before bedtime and many people find it can given them vivid dreams or can change their mood in the day.

Hi Ascending, it is great that you have started treatment again. Why did you stop? It is likely that there will not be a problem and your treatment will still work. To check this get a viral load test sorted for a few weeks after restarting. The viral load should be suppressed again.

I started my treatment 2021 December then I stopped for 2 month then I started again with Luvigen, I’d like to know what will happen to me,like am I going to get sick again. I can’t have that right now

Hi Zanele, Aluvia is a generic version of the protease inhibitor called lopinavir/r. It is a second-line drug but needs to be used in combination with other meds. Luvigen is a newer medicine that contains three meds in the same pill. It is a generic version of TLD for the three drugs: tenofovir, lamivudine and dolutegravir.

Other the last year or two, most countries are moving to TLD as first-line treatment. This is also good for people who were on previous second-line combination because dolutegravir is a new type of drug called an integrase inhibitor, so it can be used in some people as first-line and in others as second- or third-line.

Am experiencing dizziness since I ws changed to luvigen every time am in bed this start to happen nd I take them at night

Hi Nthabi, it is usually recommended to take Luvigen in the morning rather than at night. Luvigen is known to cause problems with sleeping. Taking them in the morning means this side effect wear off before bed and it will not effect sleep.

Hi Setshoane, for how long have you been experiencing the cough? And is it only after you take treatment? Luvigen should not be causing this effect. How are you feeling? You could still be recovering from your sore throat a couple of weeks ago.

In general Luvigen is recommended to be taken in the morning. This is regardless of coughing. Luvigen can cause problems sleeping and by taking it in the morning, this side effect usually wears off before bed.

Hi Lorraine, yes you can do this. It is even recommended to take Luvigen in the morning. You do not need to consult healthcare before switching the time of your medication.

Have you spoken with a doctor about your sore throat?
