Q and A

Question

Can I take Truvada with moderate liver cirrhosis?

Since my HIV diagnosis 5 years ago I have been prescribed Truvada (1 pill per day) and Isentress (2x600mg per day). I’ve never understood why, but my main question is that approx 2 years ago upon routine checks the docs discovered I have moderate liver Cirrhosis.

I have read that PrEP is possibly not good for those with liver problems. Should I be worried and possibly ask if other possible HIV treatments are possible?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Truvada can be taken if you have moderate liver cirrhosis. Truvada is safe in this case unless your liver cirrhosis becomes severe.

You can watch out for signs inc: skin or the whites of your eyes turning yellow, dark coloured urine, pale stools, loss of appetite for several days, nausea, or stomach area pain.

This should also be regularly monitored by your doctor.

There is no cause to be concerned if you are regularly being monitored. How do you feel on your current treatment? There are other options available but if you are feeling healthy, there is no reason for you to switch treatment.

Josh.
