Q and A

Question

Should my baby continue with nevirapine?

Hi, my baby is 6 wks and tested negative. She’s given co-trimoxaxole and she is on nevirapine. Must I stop on giving her nevirapine? I’m also on ARVs with undetectable viral load and breastfeeding.

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Congratulations on having a baby.

As you are undetectable. You do not need to continue giving baby nevirapine.

Baby can continue with co-trimoxazole.

Hi Reitumetse, congratulations on having a baby. Mixed feeding can increase the risk of transmission. However as you are undetectable this risk is considered negligible. Before 6 months it is still recommended to only feed using one method to avoid any potential risk. It is recommended that breastfeeding only is the best option, however if this is not suitable, formula feeding alone will be suitable.
