Question
Is my negative HIV test accurate?
29 October 2007. Related: All topics, HIV transmission.
In December last year i met a women on a internet dating site. We arranged to go for a drink and ended up back at her place. Although I didn’t know her very well, we had unprotected sex. At the time I was taking anti depressant medicine and its only been since I stopped taking the anti depressants that I’ve been worrying about HIV. Around 4 months after the unprotected sex i devoloped a rash on my upper inner thighs but no other syptoms. Lately I’ve felt fatigued, had bad back, leg and hip pain with occasional headaches. I had an HIV test on the 16th of October this year which came back negative. Do you think there is any chance the result was wrong?
Answer
You do not have HIV.
An HIV test 3-6 months after the potential exposure will tell you whether you are HIV-positive or not. Nine months is plenty of time for the result to be accurate.
