Q and A

Question

Is it possible to have an HIV negative baby?

Hi I have tested HIV positive at 8 months pregnant. Is it possible to have a safe baby?

Answer

Hi, how are you?

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Yes it is possible to have a healthy, HIV negative baby. Have you started treatment?

Starting treatment now, even though late in your pregnancy, will greatly reduce the risk of transmission. Baby will also be given their own medication after birth to further reduce this risk.

HIV positive women all over the world give birth to healthy, HIV negative children. Finding out your HIV status late is not uncommon and treatment, even a few weeks before birth will significantly reduce the likelihood of passing on HIV.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy,

Josh.
