Question

Have I been storing PrEP correctly?

I’ve been taking my PrEP medication for the last three weeks daily, however I have been leaving the container uncovered, stored in a dark and dry location. I lost the cap, I know this isn’t proper storage for Descovy , but now I’m worried that the medication I’ve been taking isn’t effective. Would this be the case? I’m going to get a new prescription do that this isn’t an issue anymore.

Answer

Hi, how are you?

When storing PrEP, if not sealing again in the original packaging, it is still suitable to use them for up to 6 weeks. This means that for the last 3 weeks your PrEP will have still been working.

As the location is a dark and dry location, no other factors will have effected how well PrEP works unless this location is below 15 degrees centigrade or above 40 degrees centigrade.

Josh.

Hi Mark and thanks for getting in touch.

It should be ok to have after two months but to be sure check the expiry date on the bottle.

It should still be ok to use.

If you are concerned though buy a new batch.

I got a PEP bottle from the pharmacy 2 months ago and I opened it to see the size of drug without taking it.
Is there is any harm to take the opened bottle after two months? Or I should go and get new ones?

Hello Josh and thanks for the question.

Your medication writes on the box the exact temperature it should be stored at.

Most refrigerators operate between 2-8 degrees Celsius

You have to check to be sure but I don’t think you would have a problem.

Hi Matt, are there any instructions/labels that mention this of the bottle of PrEP?

After opening most medications will have a shorter shelf life. In most cases it is one year from the date you open the bottle.

If there is no specific information listed you can ask your phamarcist and they will be able to provide this information.

Hi there, I want to ask that if I open the bottle of PrEP, will its shelf life be the same as it is marked on the bottle? Or I should take it within certain times?
