Q and A

Question

Does HIV lower white blood cells?

Does HIV increase the percentage of lymphocyte and lower the percentage of neutrophil in CBC?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

HIV causes a reduction in CD4 cells. CD4 cells are immune cells called lymphocytes.

On a standard CBC, lymphocytes and neutrophils are counted as one value. In this case the white blood cell result would be low.

Lymphocyte is a more suitable measure in HIV. Both both lymphocytes and neutrophils can be reduced.

Lymphocyte percentage does not increase.

Josh.
