Question

Could my 5 year old son be HIV positive?

Hi I’m HIV+ – my son was tested negative – I breast fed for 6 months and want to know if is it possible that he can be HIV+ after 5 years?

Answer

Hi there
Congratulations on your baby boy and great that he is now five years old.
Your HIV clinic should have tested your son when he was about 2 years old and a negative result then, means he should still be HIV negative now.
If for any reason you didn’t have that test, it might be good to ask for him to tbe tested now – or to check the medical notes in case you were just not given the results.
I am sure he will be negative, but this is better to check rather than be  worrying about it.
