Q and A

Question

Does honey, turmeric and ginger effect Biktarvy?

Would consuming a table spoon of chestnut honey (with some extra pollen and bee gum), turmeric and ginger mixture after one hour of taking Biktarvy cause any interactions with the drug? Or worsen HIV somehow?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

No. There is no risk of interaction between Biktarvy and this mixture.

This mixture of chestnut honey, turmeric and ginger will not reduce how well Biktarvy works. It will also not cause HIV to be worsened.

Josh.

Hi Victoria, yes you are right. Biktarvy and magnesium can be taken if you take them at opposite ends of the day e.g., Biktarvy when you wake up and magnesium before you go to bed.

This allows enough time between medications to prevent any interaction. Taking them closer together can risk the magnesium preventing all of the Biktarvy being absorbed and reduce how effective it is.

Hi Vik, I do not recognise the supplements you have mentioned.

Biktarvy should not be taken with supplements containing magnesium, calcium and/or zinc. These minerals can risk the body being unable to absorb all of the Biktarvy.

The easiest way to avoid any interaction is to take Biktarvy and these supplements at opposite ends of the day. This will be a long enough time to prevent any risk of interaction between them.

I’ve begun taking Triphala (an Indian Ayurvedic herbal supplement) for digestive issues, along with neem, berberine and allicin. Will any of these interact with Biktarvy? Thanks!
