Question

My baby has no nvp after 6 weeks…

Hi, I would like to ask, my baby was born negative at birth after six weeks they have stopped her nvp at the clinic. After that at the clinic they didn’t give her anything and i’m still breastfeeding, will my baby be positive?
Now she 9 weeks old I bought Novatrim will she get infected?

Answer

Hi, how are you?

Congratulations on having a baby.

Stopping nvp after 6 weeks is normal, even if you do continue to breastfeed.

This is because there is no benefit in continuing to give nvp after 6 weeks. It has no benefit of continuing to prevent transmission. This is explained further here.

Are you on treatment? and do you have a low/suppressed viral load? In most cases it is because the mother is doing well on treatment that baby noes not need an extended course of nvp.

Giving baby Novatrim will not risk transmission. Novatrim is given to baby while still being breastfed to prevent other infections that mum may still be at risk of. Giving baby medication is not considered mixed feeding.

Josh.
