Question

Did I become positive because of my sisters breastmilk?

Hi Dr my sister is HIV positive but she never told anyone about it I only found out few weeks ago, so what happened is last year June I tested negative but when I went to the clinic on December I was positive because I was using her breast milk for my eyes because they say breast milk is good for eye sight.

I wanted to find out what are the chances that I got the virus from her?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?
Have you had your test result confirmed at a health clinic? and if so have you started treatment? and how are you feeling about being HIV positive?
There is no risk of you getting HIV from your sisters breast milk.
Breast milk carries no risk of transmission to adults. This is because there are
antiviral properties of breastmilk and HIV does will only last a minute or two after being expressed into breastmilk.
Can I ask where/who told you about breastmilk being good for your eyes? There is no evidence to support this. Breastmilk should only be used to feed baby. It is not going to help with your eyes.
Have there been any other ways you might have come into contact with HIV e.g., unprotected sex with someone or accidents with needles?
