Q and A

Question

My baby won’t drink formula milk

Hi there,

I am hiv positive (undetectable viral load) in the UK and could only exclusively breastfeed for two months.

i now have to switch to formula and my baby is crying hysterically and refusing to drink it please help. it’s been 8 hours since we started trying.

Answer

Hi there

I am sorry you are having such a stressful time.

Please don’t worry. It is okay to still breastfeed for longer as long as you are producing milk and this is what the baby wants to do. Sometimes it just takes a while for the baby to get used to the change.

This will get you through the weekend, so that you can contact your support teams on Monday. Please also contact your clinic for advice if they are open over the weekend.

You didn’t say why you could only breastfeed for two months.

Although it is generally good to move to formula milk after a few months, there is usually flexibility for the timing.

This is also so long as you don’t have mastitis or cracked nipples etc.

BHIVA guidelines on breast and chestfeeding are at this link:

Hi Raka, good to hear that you are no longer testing. All your results you have had from your last exposure from HIV have been conclusive. You do not have HIV.

Hi Raka, no you do not have HIV. A p24 test is not used to confirm someone’s status.

Both your 4th and 3rd generation test have confirmed your result and prove that you are HIV negative. You do not require any further testing.

Please see here for more information about testing: https://i-base.info/guides/testing
