Question

I have mixed up my meds for the last month…

Hi there, I have mistakenly taken a double dose of tenofovir every day for a month, in place of tenofovir and the identical tablet ritonavir.

Answer

Hi there

Thanks for your email.

As you are in the UK, with easy access to health care, this is something to contact your clinic about tomorrow when your HIV service should be open again.

You didn;t include the names of your other meds, bur there are two different things the clinic will need to check.

One is to run a viral load test to check whether your HIV combination is still working well. Without taking the ritonavir, the other boosted drug – maybe darunavir or perhaps atazanavir – will not have been high enough.

The second is check whether the higher dose of tenofovir has caused any problems.

Both these things are likely to be okay, but please arrange this tomorrow.

Without more details about your treatment history it is difficult to comment on anything else.

It is probably best to restart the ritonavir today and then take advice from your HIV doctor tomorrow.
