Question

Can I stop nevirapine for my baby and change from breastfeeding?

Im HIV positive and live in South Africa and I have been taking my medicine everyday. my baby tested negative. I am breastfeeding her for two weeks also giving her nevirapine. Now I want to stop breastfeeding. Is it safe to stop nevirapine at 2 weeks baby.

Answer

Hi there

Congratulations on your new baby and I hope you are both doing well.

Guidelines on breastfeeding are different in each country so please can you speak to your clinic about the next step.

Although it is often easy to switch to formula milk, the clinic will be able to talk about whether this is best for you and your baby. This might depend on where in South Africa you live.

This is often okay, especially if you are having difficulties with breastfeeding.
