Question

Are there any interactions between astaxanthin and Biktarvy?

Answer

Hi there

Thanks – I am sorry but this supplement isn’t listed on the Liverpool University drug interaction website, which is the main interactions checker used by i-Base:
www.hiv-druginteractions.org/checker

A Google search though included this page from WebMD:
www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-1063/astaxanthin#interactions

This suggests that astaxanthin is metabolised by two common liver enzymes including CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 which are also shared by some HIV meds. for example bictegravir is also metabolised by CYP3A4 meaning there could be a concern.

Please speak to your doctor or pharmacist about this so they could give more specific information about the direction of any interaction. It is important to check that your HIV meds are not at risk of being processed more quickly and reducing your drug levels.

best wishes
