Q and A

Question

How accurate is the DUO test 27 days after a possible exposure?

I had a sexual contact 9 weeks ago, which was fairly low-risk. I became concerned about infection, however, because I developed symptoms 2 weeks after this contact: low fever, sensitive glands, night sweats.

I had a HIV DUO test 27 days after the contact, which was negative. I still have the gland and sweating symptoms however, although no fever (but feeling feverish at times). I therefore continue to be anxious.

My question: how accurate in statistical terms is the DUO test after 27 days (one day less than recommended minimum)? Do I need to do a repeat test?

Answer

The test is still fairly accurate, but I cannot give you the exact figures. I doubt that anybody can, in fact.

In practical terms, the ‘symptoms’ that you mention can be a result of many other underlying conditions or infections. This needs to be checked by a doctor.

As for a repeat test, you can do that for your own peace of mind. We generally advise people with active sexual life to get regularly tested-say every 6 months.
