Why do the GUM clinics say to come back after 3 months if the 28 day test is negative?

I’ve just received my test results 35 days after exposure and it came back negative. Do I need to retest again after 12 weeks after exposure? The GUM clinic advised me to come again after 12 weeks. Do I still need to go or can I put this behind me? Can I ask why they say this? The test was 4th generation. Please advise.
