Q and A

Question

I have had 2 negative HIV tests, do I need to test again?

Hello,

Thank you for your service.
I am married and cheated on my wife 7 weeks ago (unprotected vaginal sex)

After 30 days I took a HIV DUO test in London which was negative. After 7 weeks I took a HIV DUO test in London which was also negative. Am I definitely HIV negative because I want to have unprotected sex with my wife?

Regards and best wishes

Answer

Thank you for your question.

If you have had 2 negative tests then it is a good indication that you do not have HIV.

However, UK guidelines (BASHH) state that a negative test at 90 days is considered conclusive.

No, the show it is highly likely that you are HIV negative, but that you need a test at 90 days to confirm this.

    Dear Charlotte, thank you.
I have taken 2 DUO tests at 28th day and at 7 weeks.
Are they definitely showing me that I am HIV negative?

Testing is very complicated. A test at 7 weeks will be somewhere between the approximate 95% at 4 weeks and 99.99% at 12 weeks. There is not accurate data to be more precise at every timepoint in between.

For a full explanation of this please see the answer to this similar question.

    Thank you Charlotte.

I read your posts. You say HIV DUO is 95% conclusive at 28 days.
Is it 100% conclusive at 7 weeks then?

As I said the last thing I want is infecting my wife. If this happens, I will kill myself for sure.

    Thank you
