Q and A

Question

How long do enlarged lymph nodes last in seroconversion?

How long does the symptoms of HIV last at maximum period specially enlarged lymph nodes?

Do they continue getting larger after seroconversion or stop with the other symptoms.

Answer

With HIV there is a wide variety of responses.

Generally, seroconversion symptoms only last for a week or two. They all come together and all go together. See this Q&A for more information.
A few people get more severe seroconversion symptoms and need to start HIV treatment.

Enlarged lymph nodes on their own are not a symptom of HIV. Any symptom needs to be seen by a doctor who can provide individual advice.

Hi doctor, I had unprotected sex about a month ago, the last 2 weeks I’ve had a very severe sore throat that has not gone away with antibiotics. I had one lymph node that the doctor advised me had swelled it went down one day later. I still have the severe sore throat, however now I have a fever as well. My question is can hiv manifest it self in this manor. Thank you in advance.

Yes, it happens fairly regulalry, sometimes they are enlarged and easy to feel when touching them and sometimes they disappear on their own. You should not worry about that.

So when do lymph nodes go away? I had two lymph nodes close to the groin but they pop by themselves. Is that normal?

My understanding is that one form of enlarged lymph nodes, persistent generalized lymphadenopathy (PGL), can in fact persist (hence its name) throughout the ‘asymptomatic’ phase of HIV infection. According to WHO, PGL is characterized by (1) more than three separate [symmetrical] groups affected; (2) at least two nodes more than 1.5cm in diameter at each site; (3) duration of more than one month; and (4) no local or contiguous infection that might explain the adenopathy. (Clinical Management of HIV and AIDS at District Level, WHO SEARO). The enlarged nodes do not hurt, and can often only be identified by rubbing the area.
Since PGL is caused by reaction by the immune system, the enlarged nodes frequently disappear as the immune system becomes progressively more damaged by HIV, that is as CD4 counts approach 200.
