Question

Will my treatment change with the new London Consortium guidelines?

I have been reading the London Consortium HIV treatment guidelines and I’m confused as to which category I fall into and if I will be asked to change my therapy.

I was diagnosed in Dec 2008 and almost immediately went on to taking Atripla. I took this for almost two years and then switched to maraviroc and Truvada in October 2010. I have been very happy on my new tratment and experienced fewer side effects, both my cholesterol and liver functions tests have vastly improved, not to mention I no longer experience the rashes or crazy dreams from efavirenz that I used to get.

The guidelines mention for existing patients about NNRTIs but there is no mention about patients on entry inhibitors like maraviroc.

Answer

Thank you for your question.

The treatment changes are only for people living in London and Brighton.

If you were changed to maraviroc for specific health reasons such as to reduce your cholesterol and to improve your liver function then your doctor should be able to justify continuing the use of maraviroc for your treatment. If your doctor wants to change your treatment and you are worried about how this will affect your health then please let us know and we will try to support you to appeal this decision.
