Question

One risk with my boyfriend…

I am 16 year old male. I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend, it was only for about 1 minute and i was giving.

It happened only a month ago. He tested negative for HIV, 2 months after he broke up with his previous.

Can I have test now and get a def result or do I have to wait. What are my chances of catching HIV from this encounter?

Answer

Your exposure risk sounds very low because your partner is probably HIV-negative and because you only have had one potential exposure.

Because of these factors I wouldn’t worry that you have caught HIV, but it you want to check this you could take a test now, and then confirm the results again in 3 months. This is because it can take up to 3 months for your body to generate the immune response that the test looks for.

Your boyfriends HIV-status depends on any other risks he may have taken since breaking up with his last partner and it is not clear if this was recent or some times ago.
