Question

What is happening to my CD4 count and why is it changing?

Hello,

Since I started taking cortisone, my doctor is checking my level of CD4 every 2 weeks.

2 weeks ago, I got CD4 count of 739 and CD4% at 25.3%, viral load 16,000.

Today my CD4 count dropped to 418 and CD4% to 24.6%, viral load 25,000.

What’s happening? It is normal to have these kind of changes?

Thanks

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is perfectly normal to see a fluctuation in your CD4 count. For a full explanation as to why this happens please follow this link to a similar question.

When the CD4 count fluctuates, the CD4% is often used as it is usually more stable. Your CD4% is still good and the changes are so small that they could be said to be stable which is good.
