Q and A

Question

Are warts contagious?

Answer

Yes. Warts are caused by a family of viruses called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). There are over 100 different types of HPV. Some cause genital warts, some cause warts on your hands or feet, and some are linked to cervical and anal cancers.

HPV is spread from skin-to-skin contact, especially the strains relating to genital warts and cervical/anal cancer. You can also spread warts from one part of your body to another.

HPV responsible for plantar warts (on your feet) can be picked up indirectly – ie from a public shower or swimming pool.
