Question

Am I infected?

HIV Worries:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been worrying for close to 3 and a half years that I have HIV. I am married, and have just discovered that I’m pregnant. Before I met my husband I was in a 3 month relationship. We did use condoms, but on at least 3 occasions they split. I did have an HIV test before that relationship which came back negative. I have become paranoid, my husband thinks I’m nuts. For over three years I have maybe had just one cold, I do take care of myself, eating veg, fruit. I don’t drink or smoke either, but I have convinced myself that I have HIV and I’m petrified. I know I have to have an HIV test for my unborn child’s sake but I have been worrying myself sick, literally.

Please advise.

M.

Answer

Dear M,

Worrying is something totally natural when it comes to results from HIV test. Unfortunately, I have to say that in your case, the only way to now your status is to go for the test.

Keep in mind that HIV is a difficult virus to catch and the majority of the results come back negative. You will also have a pre-test counselling, where a specialist will explain to you what are the possible outcomes and you’ll have the chance to discuss your fears. That may help convincing you to get the test done.

Good luck!
