Q and A

Question

How long can you live with AIDS?

I read some website back in 2004 which said that once a person has AIDS they will die within 6 months to 2 years. Is this true with the latest medications? I thought you could live a long time with AIDS.

Answer

Thank you for your question. We have answered this question many times before.

You are right, things have moved on quite a bit since the advent of antiretroviral therapy. With HIV treatment, people with AIDS (or advanced HIV infection) can live a very long time if they have access to treatment and adhere to it as prescribed.

    Hi Ankit,

The quick answer is that with modern HIV drugs (called ART) your life expectancy is likely to be similar to if you were HIV negative. Please see this link for a full answer on this topic.

And please see the i-Base guide to a balanced diet and your health.

    Hi Michael,

I’m sorry to hear that your boyfriend isn’t able to accept his status and access treatment. Unfortunately this is common. Though it can be frustrating at the end of the day no one can make a loved one take treatment. Taking treatment is a personal choice.

Explaining the benefits may help, and you’ll be aware of these. Offering to go to clinic with him may also help.
