Question

I am newly diagnosed with HIV, can I ever have a normal life?

I have been HIV positive for four months now. I am scared that I will have to stay in and out of hospital in my life. Am I right?

Answer

Thank you for your question. Being scared and unsure of what life is going to be like living with HIV, are quite natural reactions. Living with HIV can be hard but it does get better with time.
Many people live with HIV for years without getting ill and without needing treatment. Living with HIV does not mean that you will be in and out of hospital for the rest of your life. Knowing that you have HIV is important because now you can get the support you need. You will be monitored regularly by a doctor and know when to start HIV treatment to keep from getting ill.

It is important to take one day at a time and to continue to find out more information on HIV as well as treatment. If you do need any more information please do come back to us. In the meantime, take a look at our Introduction to Combination guide.

Best of luck.
