Q and A

Question

Which countries that do not allow HIV positive people to visit?

Can you please name a few countries who do not allow hiv +ve people? What about Saudi Arabia ?

Answer

Further information on the legislation of the different countries is published at the following link:
https://www.hivtravel.org

It is important to recognise that what countries have on paper is impossible to enforce in practice. Even when countries say that HIV is a bar to entry, and even if they maintain the right to test you, this very rarely happens unless they have a reason to think you are HIV positive.

Even with restrictive policies, for short trips, some HIV positive people still travel for holidays and business. The main complication comes if your meds are found by border control or immigration.

For this reason some people decide not to travel to countries that show this discrimination.

Hi Aditya, Australia does not prevent entry for those living with HIV. As you are applying to work you will require a visa – this requires an HIV test. Testing positive means you will be subject to meeting certain criteria. These require that HIV is not likely to: require healthcare or community services, result in significant cost to the community, and prejudice to an Australian citizen/resident to healthcare/community services.

This is determined on an individual basis. Are you able to contact your local Australian embassy to discuss this? This is a link to a charity in Australia similar to i-base that will be able to offer further information: https://napwha.org.au/contact/

Hi Wendy, unfortunately Bahrain is not too welcoming for those with HIV. HIV testing is required to work/gain residence in Bahrain and testing positive will risk deportation.

In the UK there are no restrictions for those living with HIV and treatment can be easily accessed. This remains true for most of western Europe also.

Hi Loveth, if you are only travelling to Dubai and not intending to stay you are not required to declare your HIV status. Nor are you required to test/provide information about HIV.

Applying for residency/work permits requires testing. Testing positive for HIV means your application will be denied.

Hi Lance, yes it is possible to work in the UK. Depending on what your role as a nurse will entail, you may be required to test often and show that you are on medication.

Being HIV positive is not a barrier to being a nurse in the UK.

Hi Aisha, congratulations on your job offer. Thailand has no formal requirements for testing – there is no restriction on working. More information can be found here: https://www.hivtravel.org/Default.aspx?PageId=143&CountryId=178

I am unsure about access as i-base is UK based. Are you able to contact your local embassy for Thailand?
