Q and A

Question

Which countries that do not allow HIV positive people to visit?

Can you please name a few countries who do not allow hiv +ve people? What about Saudi Arabia ?

Answer

Further information on the legislation of the different countries is published at the following link:
https://www.hivtravel.org

It is important to recognise that what countries have on paper is impossible to enforce in practice. Even when countries say that HIV is a bar to entry, and even if they maintain the right to test you, this very rarely happens unless they have a reason to think you are HIV positive.

Even with restrictive policies, for short trips, some HIV positive people still travel for holidays and business. The main complication comes if your meds are found by border control or immigration.

For this reason some people decide not to travel to countries that show this discrimination.

    Hi Thomas,

You being positive won’t be an issue with regards to applying for a visa for Canada or the UK.

    Hello,
I am hiv+ on medication. I am planning to visit Egypt for a short business trip, maximum two weeks. I am not sure what’s the situation is right now. I have read about long stays and work visa (which is not the case) but not about short stays (business and tourist). About the medication, it is advised to bring it in original package and with a letter from your doctor stating that it is for your personal use, but that will directly disclose my status… I am confused and scared of being stopped at the airport.
    Any advise? Any similar experience?
    Thanks

    Hi Uziel,

You being positive won’t be an issue, you won’t even be asked about your status when applying for a visa. If you do come to the UK to study, please get back in touch with us as we’ll be able to tell you how to access meds and care.
