Q and A

Question

Which countries that do not allow HIV positive people to visit?

Can you please name a few countries who do not allow hiv +ve people? What about Saudi Arabia ?

Answer

Further information on the legislation of the different countries is published at the following link:
https://www.hivtravel.org

It is important to recognise that what countries have on paper is impossible to enforce in practice. Even when countries say that HIV is a bar to entry, and even if they maintain the right to test you, this very rarely happens unless they have a reason to think you are HIV positive.

Even with restrictive policies, for short trips, some HIV positive people still travel for holidays and business. The main complication comes if your meds are found by border control or immigration.

For this reason some people decide not to travel to countries that show this discrimination.

    Hi Abhi,

There are no entry restrictions for people living with HIV in these countries. Here is a link to HIV Travel. You can scroll through and check each country you plan to visit.

But you can check with your local embassies about visa applications and any requirements.

    Hi,

I am planning to visit Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin for tourism. I am on regular ARV medication for more than a year with viral load under control. Will I be allowed a tourist visa? Are there are HIV / any other kind of check-ups required before applying for the visa or for visa official to approve it?

    Regards, Abhi

    Hi Mohd,

Your status won’t be an issue when applying for a work visa for Germany. With regards to applying for a visa you’ll need to contact the appropriate immigration department.

    Hi Susan,

There are no entry restrictions to the US for people who are HIV positive.

Please see this link to HIV Travel. It says that you should carry a note from the doctor saying that the ARVs are for your personal use.

    Hi V2j,

Sorry, but it looks difficult. There will be a compulsaory HIV test if applying for a work permit. This website says that persons whose HIV-positive status becomes known are deported.
