Q and A

Question

How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.

The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.

As you have not indicated this in your email, I am sending you our general guide on HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. The guide includes detailed information on the various options available. Please follow this link to this guide to HIV and pregnancy for more information.

    Hi

Being on treatment does not stop you having a baby. Many HIV-positive women find that having better health from treatment is part of the reason that they want to start a family.

Talk to your doctor about your plans as sometimes one of the HIV drugs (efavirenz/Sustiva/Stoctrin) is switched when trying to conceive and during the first months of the pregnancy. Accumulating evidence appears to suggest that these early concerns about using efavirenz may be over cautious.

It is not clear whether it is you or your wife who is HIV positive.

The risk to your baby relates to your wife’s HIV status. By using HIV treatment during pregnancy this risk is dramatically reduced.

i was told ealier last month that i start taking hiv treatment and that scared me because i dont know if i am ready to take it, and also for the fact that will i be able to have a baby once i have started taking the treatment or maybe it will prevent me from having one. i also need to know that how long will i have to wait in trying to have a baby if i start taking the hiv treatment.
