How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.

The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.

As you have not indicated this in your email, I am sending you our general guide on HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. The guide includes detailed information on the various options available. Please follow this link to this guide to HIV and pregnancy for more information.

    Hi Sonia,
Fertility issues are not expected with HIV. And many women have become pregnant when taking ARVs. Can you talk to the IVF clinic about the reasons why it didn’t work?

I am HIV positive female and underwent 2 ivf cycles but both failed.
I am undetectable. Is it that Arvs affect fertility that’s the reason it didn’t work?
    I am 37.

    Hi SF,

I’m so sorry to hear about your 2 miscarriages. But the simple answer to your question is Yes, it is possible for you to get pregnant.

It’s great that your partner has started HIV treatment (ART) and it’s important for you to start too. Taking ART and having an undetectable viral load can protect you and your baby from HIV. In fact many HIV positive women all over the world have had healthy HIV negative babies on ART.

It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about starting ART and plan for your baby once viral load is undetectable. Please discuss previous miscarriage with the doctor too.

There’s much more info in this guide to HIV pregnancy and women’s health.

    Hi LL,

Fertility issues aren’t influenced by a persons positive status. Talking to a specialist may help. Please see a doctor about the vagina itch.

    Hi Kat,

The simple answer is yes, however you’ll be on treatment and have an undetectable viral load. See Q’s 6, 9 and 14 here: http://i-base.info/qa/what-are-the-most-asked-questions

Hi I just found out that am hiv positive and my partner is negative..we want to have a child,so am afraid because am hiv positive…I don’t want to infect him or our child! Is it really possible for me to fall pregnant or not? Can I sleep with him without using protection???

    Hi Lisa,

I’m sorry to hear this news about you when you were 13.

But it’s great that you have been taking ARVs for 2 years. And Yes! It is possible for you to be pregnant. If you are stable on your ARVs and your viral load is undetectable your partner is protected from HIV and this can also protect your baby. Many HIV positive women have had healthy HIV negative babies by taking HIV treatment (called ART).

Here is a link to U=U (undetectable = untransmittable).

And you can read about having a baby in this guide to HIV, pregnancy and womens’ health.
