Q and A

Question

How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.

The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.

As you have not indicated this in your email, I am sending you our general guide on HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. The guide includes detailed information on the various options available. Please follow this link to this guide to HIV and pregnancy for more information.

    Hi Blessing,

As Lisa says on this Q&A, telling someone you love that you’re HIV positive can be hard.

But you could first try talking about HIV in general. Just to get an idea of his reaction before you tell him about yourself. But you don’t have to do it all at once.

As Lisa says there’s a lot of info on our website. And this can help you explain that if you’re on treatment and undetectable there’s not a risk to him even if you don’t use condoms. Please see U=U.

    Hi Habo,

I can’t say when you should start to try again for a baby, this is something that you’ll need to talk to a doctor about.
With regards to being positive and a pregnancy, you’ll need to be on medication. The medication will reduce the risk of transmission to a child. Please see here: http://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy

Hi my partner and I are 22 years old and we recently found out that we were HIV positive and pregnant at the same. The pregnancy didn’t go well so I miscarried, how long should wait to try again and what needs to be done before we can fall pregnant to protect our baby from virus since we are both positive

    Hi Patience.

If you aren’t on meds and you’re having sex without a condom your husband is at risk. Please see Q 6 here for info about pregnancy: http://i-base.info/qa/what-are-the-most-asked-questions

    Hi Ajoke,

ARVs don’t have any impact on a persons ability to get pregnant or not. If you’re having issues with getting pregnant, please see a specialist.
