Q and A

Question

Shall I tell my GP that I am HIV-positive as I am on anaemia treatment?

I am getting treatment for anaemia but my family doctor does not know that I am also HIV +ve. My question is that if it is essential to tell him about HIV or treatmet is same as to HIV-negitive person?

Answer

Whether to disclose your status is entirely and only your decision. Many people prefer to tell their GPs that they are HIV-positive in case this affects the care or treatment they get at the GP. It may also make it easier for some HIV-related illnesses.

This depends on your circumstances and preferences. Concerns about stigma and confidentiality are usually the reason that some people choose not to tell their GPs.

Some antiretrovirals have anaemia as a side effect, but I cannot comment on your case without knowing more about your treatment history and anaemia treatment.
