Question
I am HIV positive. Can I study in America and Europe?
17 January 2012. Related: All topics.
I am HIV positive and I want to further my studies abroad in Europe or US.
Is it possible?
I am from the Chinese mainland.
Answer
The best thing for you to do is to contact the Embassies of the different countries you are interested in going to. They will be able to provide you with more detailed information. This will include whether you can study there as well as important information about what, as a student, you will be eligible for, in terms of access to health care.
Best wishes

Hi Nish,
There aren’t any restrictions for people who are positive entering into European countries. However, access to HIV medication varies from country to country. Which country is it that you’d like to move to?
I’m positive, I live in Kenya. My husband lives in Europe, can I still go and stay with him?
Hi Jongi,
Yes you can study in Canada, the UK and within the EU. How you access ARVs however will vary depending on which country you wish to move to. For example in the UK ARVs are free to anyone who is positive and this includes students from overseas.
I want to study further in Canada, UK, or any other European countries. Is it still possible for a positive to continue further study ? As i checked last time, if i want to undergo post-grad programs i need to stay more than 6 months (8-12 months) means i must have stay permit in the country i’m interested in. Thank you .
Hi Thiha,
Yes you can study in both the UK and US, you being positive isn’t a problem. With the US you’ll need comprehensive health insurance for your ARVs, whereas in the UK ARVs are free.
Can you study in the US or UK if you’re positive?
Hi Naata,
Where is it that you’d like to go?
Hi…
