Answer

I can appreciate it must be difficult for you dealing with a new HIV diagnosis. Have you got anyone supporting you around this? Are you in touch with other HIV positive people? I ask because although this is early on in your diagnosis, many newly diagnosed people  find it helpful to talk to others in the same situation. It can not only give you comfort to know that you are not alone, it also enables you to share experiences and listen to how others have coped.

Your first question was whether you have a future. The good news is that we now have very effective HIV medication which can enable people living with HIV to live a long life. Studies have shown that on average, with access to and careful use of treatment, someone diagnosed with HIV can have a life expectancy similar to that of an HIV negative person.

Your second question was whether you would ever have a relationship.  Many HIV positive people have gone on to have healthy fulfilling relationships. This has included starting families if that is what they wish. Many more have gone on to have or continue being in relationships with partners who are not HIV positive.

As you live in Ireland, you might find it useful to contact the HIV Support Centre in Belfast. Please follow this  link for their contact details. They will be able to give you more information about  support available in your area.

Best wishes.
