Q and A

Question

I am taking PEP, can I have uprotected sex?

I’ve been taking lamzid for 5 days now and I want to find out how this will
affect my pregnant partner when we have unprotected sex?

I am taking lamzid because I slept with someone without a condom and I felt
very unsafe so I went to the doctor within 72 hours and he prescribed lamzid for me.

My pregnant partner is only 7weeks pregnant will this harm our baby?

Answer

There is no data on whether PEP can harm the unborn baby. However, unprotected sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner. That is why it is important to wait until you finish the course and have done the follow-up confirmatory test.

For more information on PEP and the risks of sexual transmission, please follow this link to our guide.

Best wishes

    Hi Anthony,

Unfortunately, PEP needs to be taken as soon after exposure as possible. This is preferably within hours rather than days. Most guidelines have a cut off for PEP of 48 hours after exposure.

Even though in the UK you can get PEP for up to 72 hours it is much less likely to work when it is used this late.

If, after testing and confirmation, you’re HIV negative, is PrEP available to you where you live? Please see this guide to PEP and PrEP.

Does PEP is still effective, if later as 10 days of HIV expossure?, I was paranoid I had condomless sex last two weeks

    Hi Kim,

As Angelina says above, condomless sex whilst you are taking PEP is not recommended. This is because you don’t know your status and you could infect your partner.

    Hi Catherine,

If you are taking PEP it should protect against HIV from a new risk. But is it possible for you to access PrEP after you’ve finshed PEP, and have a confirmed HIV negative result?

Here’s more info on PEP and PREP.

    Hi Eric,

Unfortunately, we are not doctors at i-Base. But we give up-to-date treatment information to people who are HIV positive and their friends and family.

We do not have resources for answering more questions on HIV risk and transmission. Please discuss this with your doctor.

You can tell them about the gap between PrEP and starting PEP. Also you can check with your partner whether he had a very high viral load when you had condomless sex. And also tell them if you were taking meds at that particular time.

Roy, this is Eric. I didn’t find much on that link. So, you’re saying that me being on PEP (truvada 200-300mg and isentress 400mg) and being exposed to hiv through unprotected sex with my partner, I won’t have to restart PEP? And that it is low risk of getting hiv or having to restart PEP due to the truvada that I’ve been on for 3 weeks now. I really need more of a solid answer. I need to know if Me being on PEP while my partner is positive and has a viral load will this regiment of PrEP and PEP (truvada and isentress) protect me from getting hiv or having to restart?
