Q and A

Question

Where can I get legal advice about HIV and divorce?

I am a Bulgarian HIV positive woman who lives in London.

I am on treatment and I am registered with a London hospital. I am married to another EU citizen (non-UK). I work and pay my taxes here. So far-so good, but recently I have started considering to get divorced as my relationship is getting quite complicated.

As I am mainly the breadwinner in the family, I am not left with much money for an expensive legal advisor or lawyer. I would like to ask whether you can suggest any organisation or institution that may provide me with advice on my status during and after the divorce on the background of HIV-infection, right to work, etc. keeping in mind that the status of Bulgarian and Romanian citizens of the EU in the UK have particular specificities?

Thank you in advance for any advice. Please feel free to publish the reply on the website as some other women may benefit from it.

Thanks again.

Answer

As you have said you live in London try contacting either Positively UK or Body and Soul. They are London-based organisations providing all types of support for people living with HIV, including advice on legal matters and immigration.

The Terrence Higgins Trust also provide advice and support on legal issues nationwide.

If you are struggling with the cost of legal fees in relation to your separation you may be eligible to receive legal aid or assistance. To find out if you are eligible for assistance you can contact your local Citizen’s Advice Bureau.
